MOUTH CANCER:

THE SILENT KILLER

Did you know that every year, oral cancer kills more people than either cervical or skin cancer? The statistics surrounding this condition are truly staggering – only half of patients diagnosed go on to survive more than five years, and nearly 25% of cases occur in people who don’t participate in any of the common risk factors like excessive tobacco/alcohol use. At Flawless Smile Dentistry, our doctors wants to help you fight oral cancer, and routine screenings are a valuable asset in diagnosing cancerous tissues as early on as possible, boosting the chances of a successful, lasting recovery. If our doctors discovers a suspicious area, he can help you arrange a biopsy to identify whether cancerous or pre-cancerous cells are present. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

An oral cancer screening is a quick, painless evaluation of the entire oral cavity, including the tongue, cheeks, gums, lips, roof of your mouth, floor of your mouth, and the tissues near the throat. Your provider will also gently check your lymph nodes for swelling. Most screenings rely on a conventional oral examination, but if anything looks unusual, they may recommend further testing or referral to an oral surgeon for closer evaluation.
Early detection dramatically improves survival rates. According to the National Cancer Institute, cancers found in their early stages carry a much higher chance of successful treatment because abnormal tissue can often be removed before it spreads. The Oral Cancer Foundation notes that many cases are diagnosed late, which is why regular screenings during dental visits play a crucial role in better outcomes.
Warning signs of oral cancer may include unexplained bad breath, sores that do not heal, changes in the oral mucosa, difficulty swallowing, or a persistent lump in the neck. Patients should also monitor for red or white patches, numbness, or swelling along the gum line or tongue. These are not always signs of cancer, but they warrant evaluation by a healthcare provider or dentist for early diagnosis.
Risk increases with tobacco use, high alcohol consumption, prolonged sun exposure (linked to cancers of the lip), and a history of HPV. The American Cancer Society notes that men over 45 have a higher incidence, but oral cancer can develop in anyone. Genetics, family history, and chronic poor oral hygiene also contribute to higher risk factors.
If your dentist identifies tissue that cannot be explained by irritation or infection, they may refer you for a biopsy, where a small sample of tissue is examined for cancerous cells. Sometimes additional tools, such as toluidine blue stain, imaging, or CT scans, help determine whether further evaluation is needed. Early follow-up allows for timely cancer diagnosis and the best chance at successful treatment.
